Performance artist Christine Sun Kim focuses on what she calls “the physicality of sound”.
The taste curators at Nowness posted cult filmmaker Todd Selby’s short showing how Kim works in NYC’s Chinatown as she picks up sounds from the streets and balloons to create “seismic calligraphy” with the help of nails and vibrating subwoofers.
Kim explains, “It’s a lot more interesting to explore a medium that I don’t have direct access to and yet has the most direct connection to society at large.” Since “social norms surrounding sound are so deeply ingrained that, in a sense, our identities cannot be complete without it.”
